Jurors' Statement

The term "digital media" is relatively new and it may mean different things to different people. For us at Parkland College, digital media is commercial art for the new millenium. Digital media artists work in marketing communications, gaming and the entertainment industries. We create advertising, graphic design, web sites, illustration, visual effects for movies, game art, animation, publications, fonts, and much more. Our business cards carry titles like "designer," "illustrator," "animator," "art director," "production artist" or "technical artist."

Digital artists often work in collaborative environments, partnering with programmers, writers, photographers and musicians to create dynamic content that enlighten, entertain, inform and help sell products or services.

Everything a digital artist does today involves the use of computers. We use software programs such as Maya, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver and Flash to produce creative visual communication for entertainment, broadcast, print and the Internet. However, at the end of the day, we see the computer simply as another tool, no different than the pencil or the paintbrush.

Commercial artists — like fine artists — are creative people. We're passionate about our work, we love to take risks and to explore new ideas. Our best work balances form with function, aesthetics with style, logic with intuition. When jurying a creative exhibition, we look for work that is imaginative, surprising, inspiring, distinctive, innovative, unusual, smart and memorable.

This juried exhibition is, in our opinion, the best creative work produced by students in the digital media, graphic design and web design programs at Parkland College.
