InDesign: Foreign Accents

 

Objective

 

To learn how to create professional accents. To be introduced to ligatures. To learn InDesign typesetting procedures and shortcuts by example.

Procedure

 

  1. examine downloaded files
  2. launch InDesign
  3. file > new: letter, portrait, margins=0; save as preset
  4. practice Adobe navigation keyboard shortcuts: space=hand; space+cmd=zoom in; space+cmd+opt=zoom out; cmd+zero=fit in window
  5. practice InDesign preview shortcuts: cmd+opt+I (show/hide hidden characters); W (normal/preview mode)
  6. file > place "Foreign Accents.txt"
  7. select all; make type 20/30 AGaramond
  8. using "Foreign Accents.pdf" as reference, create all the appropriate accents, fractions and other typographic marks
  9. turn ligatures on/off (control palette: flyout); locate and observe ligatures
  10. add your name to the bottom of page
  11. print; submit b&w laser proof with your name on it for grading
  12. file graded proof in your 3-ring binder for individual review
