InDesign: Creating Paragraph Styles

Objective

To create and apply paragraph styles.

Procedure

  1. download and unzip the starter files: ICE_Program.zip
  2. open ICE_Program.indd
  3. place (command-D) the file ConferenceSessions.doc on page 1; flow the text into successive columns until it is all placed (hold down shift key); save the file as yourname-X7.indd
  4. select one paragraph and set the base style:
    9.5/12 Helvetica Medium
    Space After: 0p6
Keep Options: check "at start and end of paragraph," 2 lines for both
    Hyphenation: 8/3/3/2/3, uncheck the boxes
  5. hold down the option key and click on the "new style" icon in the Paragraph Styles palette; name this style "Text"; select all the text and apply this style
  6. go to the first line of text and triple-click to select it; apply these specifications:
    18/18 Helvetica Black
    space after: 1p0
Keep Options: keep with next 1 line; all lines in paragraph together
    Hyphenation: off
    Character Color: orange
option > new style and name it "A head"; apply the style
  7. in the Paragraph Styles palette, click on the new style icon; the new style will be based on whatever was highlighted—in this case "A head"; double-click on the new paragraph style to define it:
    name it "B head"
    16/18 Helvetica Medium
    Character Color: black
now the first line has probably taken on the B head style, re-apply the A head style; apply B had to the next line
  8. apply B head to the time—we will create a new style based on B head; hold down the option key and click the new style icon; apply these specs:
name of style is "Session Time"
check "apply style to selection" box
space before 0p6; space after 0p6
    Paragraph Rules: check Rule Above
       weight .5 pt
       color: black
       width: column
       offset: 1p6
  9. skip down and select the line that says "General Interest"; create a new style called "Session Topic" and apply these specs:
    8/8 Helvetica Bold
    Left Indent: 0p3
    Space Before and After: 0p3
    Paragraph Rules: Rule Above
       weight: 10 pt.
       color: lemon
       width: column
       offset: –0p2
left indent: 0, right indent: 13p0
Keep With: next 1 lines, keep all lines together
  10. select the next line "Welcome"; create and apply this style:
    Session Title
    10.5/12.5 Helvetica Bold
Space Before: 0p3, Space After: 0p6
    Hyphenation: off
Keep With: next 1 lines, keep all lines together
  11. select the next line; create and apply this style:
    Session Speaker
    9.5/12 Bold
Keep With: next 1 lines, keep all lines together
    Hyphenation: off
  12. select the next line; create a new style based on Session Speaker:
    Session Location
    9.5/12 Helvetica Oblique
  13. you can rearrange the styles in the Paragraph Style Palette by dragging them into a new position; drag them into the order you will be using them: A head, B head, Session Time, Session Topic, Session Title, Session Speaker, Session Location, Text
  14. go through the whole document and apply the appropriate styles; when you get to page 2 you will have to create a new style for the bulleted list; adjust the tabs to make a hanging indent (indent 1p0, first lin -1p0, left tab stop at 1p0); name "List" and apply
  15. print out a copy for your binder; export to pdf and drop file in Angel for grading
