Procedure |

prepping for the exercise
- download starter files
- examine downloaded files
- launch InDesign
- file > new: letter, landscape, margins: top/bottom 3p6, left/right 2p6
- practice Adobe navigation keyboard shortcuts: space=hand; space+cmd=zoom
in; space+cmd+opt=zoom out; cmd+zero=fit in window
- practice InDesign preview shortcuts: cmd+opt+I (show/hide hidden
characters); W (normal/preview mode)
creating a chart with tabs
- file > place "chart.doc" (cmd+D); draw text frame on pasteboard
- window > paragraph styles: edit "normal" style: 11/14 Helvetica
- cut and paste chart info into separate text frame (width=51p)
- edit > select all (cmd+A)
- type > tabs (position above text frame): add left tabs (cmd+shift+T)
- type > paragraph > paragraph rules (flyout): rule below=1pt,
offset=0p6 (preview=on)
- paragraph space before=0p7
- cut and paste long text to next line as needed (use shift+RETURN)
- window > paragraph styles: new style "chart+rule"; apply style
- adjust header rule: 3pt, add paragraph space to compensate
- spec headline: 14/16 Helvetica Black
- adjust intro copy text
- replace hyphens wirth en dashes
creating a chart with tables
- layout > pages > add page
- file > place "chart.doc" (cmd+D); draw large text frame on page
- select chart info: tables > convert text to table
- table > insert > column (before column 1)
- table > insert > row (after last row)
- table > merge cells (column 1 and last row)
- adjust column width
- cut and paste intro and footer text into table
- select cells for chart area
- table > cell options > fills & strokes: bottom stroke=1pt
- table > cell options > rows & columns: row height=at least 1p7
- table > cell options > text: adjust top & bottom insets
- make rules for top row 3pt
- spec headline: 14/16 Helvetica Black
- adjust intro copy text
- replace hyphens wirth en dashes
grading
- drop pdf with your
name on it in Angel drop box for grading
- file b&w laser proof in your 3-ring binder for individual review
