Discussion |
|
Emphasis (or focal point) is the second of six design principles designers use. There are three ways to create emphasis: contrast (size, shape, value, placement, color, etc.), isolation, and direction. Designers like to create one single focal point in every design because it serves as an entry point into the design. An entry point is simply a way of saying "look here first." If there are multiple focal points, then the viewer might get confused. In mass media, where your image is in direct competition with thousands of other visual messages, your design might be ignored if it doesn't have an obvious entry point.

Procedure |
|
Part A (Concepts and Thumbnails)
- download starter files, examine files, read directions
- using your sketchbook, begin to conceptualize possible solutions
- using Adobe Illustrator, rough out your best ideas in the boxes provided
- add your name to the file, then print out your solutions
- in your assigned teams, critique each other's work
- based on the critique above, make adjustments (if needed)
- duplicate your file if you need more boxes
Part B (Best Solutions)
- using Adobe Illustrator, execute your best idea in the boxes provided
- add your name to the file, then export a JPEG and publish it on your personal projects page for class critique
- based on the critique above, make adjustments (if needed)
- submit b&w laser proof with your name on it for grading
- file graded proof in your Process Book for individual review
- update your projects page by publishing a JPEG of your final art
Adobe tips:
- shift: constrains (drawing, scaling, moving or copying)
- shift+click: adds/subtracts object to current selection
- opt+drag: duplicates objects
- space = hand
- space+cmd = zoom in
- space+cmd+opt = zoom out
- cmd+zero = fit in window
- the view menu offers other hotkeys
More Illustrator tips:
- type > glyphs: visually select characters (embed type tool first)
- type > create outlines: converts type to objects
- window > align: align and distribute tools (also in options bar)
