GDS 214 WEB DESIGN II
Sourcefiles
Instructor: Paul Young

Objective

To be inspired by award-winning web design. To become familiar with web design publications. To survey current trends in photography, illustration, advertising and web design.

Description

Research, collect, scan and publish examples of good graphic design from Parkland library's resources and file them in the following categories:

  • Graphic Design
  • Web Design
  • Illustration
  • Photography
  • Advertising
  • Typography
  • Other

Procedure

Visit Parkland library's reserve and periodicals section every week. Scan, link and publish designs that you are drawn to (if you own a digital camera, feel free to use it). Present your research in class every week by updating your personal projects page. Be prepared to talk about what specifically attracted you to the pieces in your collection (download the vocabulary wheel PDF file). File your selections for future reference.

Pay particular attention to these periodicals (which have to be scanned in the library):

  • CMYK
  • Communication Arts
  • Computer Graphics World
  • eDesign
  • Graphis
  • How
  • ID
  • Macworld
  • Print
  • Yahoo Internet Life

Also pay particular attention to these annuals (current volume is on reserve):

  • Art Director's Annual
  • Creative Black Book
  • Graphis Design Annual
  • Graphis Photo Annual
  • Graphis Poster Annual
  • Illustrators: Society of Illustrators Annual
  • Typography: The Annual of the Type Directors' Club
  • Workbook

Extra credit: Feel free to purchase other magazines or books at local book stores. Keep your eyes open for potential reference materials wherever you go. Take pictures, collect printed pieces, postcards, packaging, T-shirts or anything that you are attracted to.

Bonus: Share your links to really good web sites! Submit suggestions for links to the Internet Resources page. The person who submits the best link each week will win a prize.

Schedule

Research for each week due the beginning of class every Wednesday. Present your personal projects page at midterm to be graded. Present your personal projects page at your final individual review to be graded.
