Feedback for graphics design students Julie Weishar Here is some feedback from the speech faculty: 1. "What Do You Have To Say?" Creative concept - bold contrast This would be better with a vertical orientation because the posters have to fit on the columns around the college Not clear this is a speech competition for money Charity idea is there but does not stand out The poster is a bit flat - nothing really jumps out Sounds like "What do you have to say?" is asking for an opinion rather than encouraging participation in the contest 2. "Chattering Teeth" Funny - clever- creative No reason to go beyond the text bubble - doesn't really draw the eye through to bottom Put speech contest information at the top Bigger charity emphasis needed Concept is too casual / almost like ads inside a bottle cap - easy to dismiss 500.00 in text bubble and below teeth a bit redundant Liked the web page - more balanced Public speaking as chattering teeth might not be positive image 3. "Reward" Clever- creative The web page and poster a bit too busy "One small speech" does not capture the charity emphasis Good use of color The contest needs to be more prominent Web page background is competing with the message Will Old West theme grab the attention of our target demographic? 4. "Two Cents" Simple - clever - creative - great use of space Graphic of pennies might come across initially like a fund drive poster - to give money rather than compete for money Emphasize that 500.00 goes to both the speaker and the charity Prize amount too small to grab attention two cents implies opinion or debate - does not really encourage participation in the contest Nice layout 5. "Falling $$$" creative - interesting - attention getting charity not emphasized - put more emphasis on the fact that the charity receives money too Needs to put larger weight on the fact that this is a speech contest Nice layout 6. "Origami bird" Fun picture - creative - Interesting Speech contest information is too small No emphasis on charity or that both the winning speech and the charity receive 500.00 7. "Charity - dictionary page" Creative - nice layout Does a good job at pulling charity out and emphasizing it Bolder text needed for Speech contest down the side of poster Speech contest letters need to stand out more Does a good job at bringing eye down through the poster Make prize information a bit larger 8. "Human figure" Creative - interesting Not enough emphasis on charity Figure with one raised hand looks likes he is taking an oath of office or saying back away Doesn't really grab attention for charity and speech contest Figure looks a bit rigid - a bit more fun needed 9. "Speak a World of Difference" Creative - bold - good use of color Contemporary feel Do more to emphasize charity Mention 500 prize for speaker and charity Put "Speak a world of difference " at the top rather than the bottom Make contest information larger and easier to read GENERAL PRESENTATION TIPS FOR ENTIRE CLASS: 1. Practice looking at client rather than your visual 2. Have visual ready to go 3. Make good eye contact with the client 4. Relax - be confident in your choices rather than hesitant 5. Sell your design concept - tell the client why your design will deliver the desired results 6. Dress for success - think about dressing professionally for your client - this tells the client that you really care about doing your best 7. Focus on the concept elements your client mentioned - show how your design captures those elements - many of you did a good job with this. 8. Everything communicates - dress, posture, gesture, facial expression and movement. Pay attention to all the ways you communicate. Be sure your nonverbals send the same message that your words do. 9. Don't apologize - come prepared so that your design is ready to show - don't apologize for not being ready. I hope this is the feedback you were looking for.
