GDS 251 APPLIED PHOTOGRAPHY
Grading System
Instructors: Bonnie Burgund and Paul Young

In this class, your grade will be based on attendance, class participation, completion of exercises, projects, one essay and a quiz.

Final Grade

Your final grade will depend on the points you earn during the semester:

  • A = 100–91 (exceptional work beyond class requirements)
  • B = 90–81 (excellent technical and creative abilities exhibited)
  • C = 80–71 (all work accomplished on time and minimum goals achieved)
  • D = 70–61 (minimum goals not achieved, poor technique, late assignments)
  • F = 60 or less (failure to hand in assignment or failure to hand in "D" work on time)

Attendance

Attendance is required. This is especially important during studio photo shoots where your services as an assistant is required. Your grade will drop by one letter for every four classes missed. You are considered absent if you are not here when attendance is taken. "Excused" absences will only be discussed under extraneous circumstances and only if you have missed more than four classes. It is your responsibility to make up any work missed during absences.

Earning Points

Points can be earned in each of the following four categories:

  • Projects 50%
  • Finished exercises 20%
  • Sketchbook 10%
  • Sourcefiles 10%
  • Quiz 10%

Numerical grades will be awarded for each project, exercise or quiz. At the end of the semester, all the points earned for each category will be averaged and weighted to determine your final grade.

Bonus Points

Bonus points will also be awarded for active participation in class.

Student conduct

The articles of the Parkland College Student Conduct Code as outlined in the Student Policies and Procedures Manual applies in this class. Article III (Proscribed conduct) regarding dishonesty, cheating, plagiarism, theft or abuse of computer time is particularly pertinent.

Disabilities

Parkland College has enormous resources for students with disabilities. If you feel that you have a disability for which you may need an academic accommodation, please inform me as soon as possible, and/or contact the Office of Disability Services for more information.

Note

Your grade will be given to you during your individual reviews at midterm and at the end of the semester. You must bring all the work you have done up to that time (including all reference materials, concept sketches, rough prints, slides, negatives, digital files, etc.). Do not throw away any material from this class. Your grade will depend on it. At any time during the semester, you may request individual reviews to check your progress. You may revise and re-submit projects and exercises as many times as you like up until the final review.
