GDS 251 APPLIED PHOTOGRAPHY
Objectives
Instructors: Bonnie Burgund and Paul Young

 

Purpose

 

This course is designed specifically for the graphic designer whose objective is to function effectively in today's commercial art field. In this class, you will learn how to use photography to illustrate concepts for editorial and advertising projects. You will also experience the collaborative relationship between an art director and a commercial photographer. As a group, we will also learn how to run a professional photo studio.

 

Emphasis

 

We will learn basic camera operation and professional studio lighting techniques. Assignments will be geared towards learning the fundamental skills that would be applicable to a job where photographic skills are necessary. You will also have opportunities to create original images for your portfolio and other projects.

 

Class format

 

This course will consist of studio photo shoots, location assignments, lectures, demonstrations, and critiques. There will also one essay and one quiz.

 

Materials

 

In order to complete assignments, you may need to purchase more than what is listed below. Some substitutions are possible. Other materials may be required. Expect to spend approximately $200-$250 in materials for this class.

  • Required Textbook: Studio Photography by John Child
  • Optional Textbook: National Geographic Photography Field Guide: Secrets to Making Great Pictures by Peter K. Burian & Robert Caputo
  • 35mm camera with manual focus, aperture and shutter speed controls (must be approved by instructor)*
  • 5 or more rolls of color print film*
  • 5 or more rolls of color slide film
  • 1 or more rolls of b&w film (Kodak T400CN)
  • film, processing and enlargements for the above
  • loupe (8x)
  • negative pages
  • slide pages
  • felt tip pens
  • Parkland Identification

* Note: you must bring your camera and one spare roll of unexposed 35mm color print film (ISO 100) to every class.
