As an art director, you will conceive of two images you want your
photographer/ partner to create in the studio. One will involve
a model and another will involve a product or still life. Be realistic
on what is practical based on the resources at your disposal. You
may choose to do two advertising concepts or two editorial concepts
(or one of each).
If you choose advertising, select a local business and prepare
three thumbnail sketches of different ad concepts for the business.
Your ad must contain a headline. If you choose editorial, you must
write a one-paragraph summary of the article you want to illustrate,
then prepare 3 thumbnail sketches of different editorial concepts
for the same article. Present your sketches in class for critique.
Based on the critique, choose the best two concepts
and make any necessary adjustments. Make a copy of the sketches
for the photographer and discuss the shoot in great detail with
your photographer/partner. Be specific about your vision, but
allow for input from the photographer. The photographer will obtain
the models and props, but you have to sign off on his/her selections.
You are required to be present on the day of the shoot and "sign-off"
on the lighting and composition.
After the shoot, you must "sign-off" on the work prints
and approve the final print. The photographer will deliver one print
of each image to you for your files. You must reimburse the photographer
for all expenses incurred during the shoot.
Execute your designs by scanning the prints and finishing the
layout based on your sketch. Present color lasers of your final
design at your final critique.
