Objective

To research career strategies and industry trends. To become familiar with job opportunities in the local marketing communications industry.

 

Description

Using discussion forums, your textbook The Graphic Designer's Guide to Portfolio Design, The News-Gazette and online resources, students will become familiar with self-promotion strategies and the needs of the local job market:

  • Who is hiring?
  • What positions are open?
  • What are the minimum qualifications needed?
  • What skills are desired?
  • What kind of experience is needed?
  • What kind of education is needed?
  • What kind of salaries are being offered?

Student will also become familiar with industry titles and terminology (be sure to check at least the following headings in the classified ads):

  • Graphic designer
  • Graphic artist
  • Illustrator
  • Macintosh artist
  • Media specialist
  • Production Artist
  • Web designer
  • Mac operator
  • Desktop publisher
  • Computer graphics
  • Art director
  • Artist

Note: This is a team assignment. Work with your team members to divide up the work and share the research results.

 

Procedure
  1. Purchase The News-Gazette every Sunday and read the employment ads (classified and display).
  2. Login to your Angel account every week, select the "Course Documents" tab
  3. Select the assignment for the week and follow the instructions
  4. Post your completed assignment by Wednesday (spelling, grammar and clarity of thought count!)
  5. Read and respond to at least 6 of your classmates by Saturday (respond to your team members first, then respond to posts that have the least number of responses)

 

Schedule

Your initial post is due Wednesday at 11:55pm of every week. You must also respond to your teammates' posts by the following Saturday at 11:55pm.

Note: Homework assignments are graded pass/fail. Credit will be given each week only if both the initial post and responses are completed on time.
