Hometown: Mansfield IL
Year graduated: 2004
Currently working at: Spinlight (Champaign IL)
What is your design process: First, that I understand the requirements and the needs of the project and what format the client is looking for. Develop a visual language/style to use and organize content so that the piece makes sense in every aspect. Sketches and doodles in a thick sketchbook with an easy-flowing pen makes all the difference in my process. Working, reworking, and massaging the idea and the details, until it's done.
What are you learning now: To trust my instinct and intuition, while letting the design principles guide me; A healthy perspective about yourself and the world around you are vital to being all God made you to be.
Where do you find inspiration: Music—the rhythm, beat, sound, and emotion; print/european design; designspongeonline.com; my coworkers—Matt, Debby, Chris, Jolene, Linda, John and Candy; my faith—Jesus, the Bible, and in worship.
What was the most exciting project you've worked on since graduation: From SCAD—handmade felt place mats and apples (fiber arts); at Spinlight—designing a website for International Child Care Ministries and anticipating it's completion so I can use the website as a sponsor.
What were some of the most important things you learned while at Parkland: Graphic design is visual communication; every piece needs a strong concept; excellent craftsmanship can sell an "okay" idea over a poorly executed "great idea"; two typefaces are enough if you know how to use them; and the computer is just a tool.
Who is your favorite designer and why: Stefan Sagmeister: "Trying to look good, limits my life."
What is your favorite typeface and why: Trade Gothic No. 18 Condensed. It's condensed, sans serif, and modern. Plus it has a good range of weights.
