Alumni Profile:
Anni Poppen

Anni PoppenHometown: Hampshire IL
Year graduated: 2003
Currently working at: Mowgli Studio (Champaign IL)

How does it feel to be a professional designer: Sane

How do you like your job: Almost as much as my pets—and I'm head over heels for my furballs.

How did you get this job: From experience (working at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and SURFACE 51), networking, believing in my talent, and working my arse off.

What was the most exciting project you've worked on since graduation: My first year of testing my ability to go full-time on my own (and freshen up my portfolio), I donated free design/marketing to one non-profit per month for a full year while still working full-time at the University. I met people from all over the world doing incredible accomplishments and learned my desire to help while working at a fast-pace was exactly where I needed to be. Nothing ever felt more right in my life — it doesn't get more exciting than that!

What were some of the most important things you learned while at Parkland: To take criticism—my thick skin makes me a better designer. And to learn the rules so I can break them.

Who is your favorite designer and why: Art Chantry, for not giving a f*ck.

What is your favorite typeface and why: Avenir is a favorite these days, close to Helvetica or DIN, but just more delicate I think. it's subtle.
